I teach a combination of learned and my own techniques that I have developed over the past thirty years through my own work. My first love was the potter’s wheel, but I soon shifted my interest to ancient manual techniques without mechanical processes, such as the paleting from clay cylinders, Calanda vase technique, which I had the opportunity to see from the process of live elaboration, and also the techniques of expanding slabs with which I have experimented by adding textures and sgraffito while enlarging.
In the course you will learn the process of the various techniques that have finally led me to work the way I do today. They allow me to arrive at an intimate relationship between the form and the decoration with sgraffito and textures that grow and are integrated into the piece as if it were clay itself.
The course is mostly practical, the first days we learn to spread slabs with different shapes and with textures and sgraffito. Then we start make flat pieces and dishes, and later we build slab works with two and three parts. Finally, we make pots from expanded cylinders. Once the pieces dry, we decorate them with oxides and slips and paint them with an ash glaze. The pieces are fired in a gas kiln at 1260ºC. One of the pieces will be decorated by burnishing and a special clay coating and then pit-fired. The last day we open the kilns and analyze the results.
